The Phoenix Ironworks were a site of industry in the middle of Lewes for over 200 years. Recent planning permission for total demolition of the site created a chance to save thousands of beautifully made components and question both their value and likelihood of being rebuilt. We were asked to appraise this opportunity for a site of workshops near Lewes. To make such long and incongruous buildings work in the landscape we presented them as red barns with wind turbines and picket fences to attract subtle interest in their studios, galleries, and canteen.
